Recently it was cryptically revealed that the Season 3 Arena Weapon rewards would have a minimum arena rating requirement. Outrage ensued.
Debates over the nature of the arena weapons occurred over a variety of mediums, including the always-useful Elitist Jerks forums. The general idea was that there was a glut of high DPS arena weapons in PvE situations and that many players felt that they needed to participate in PvP in order to stay competitive in PvE. It was easy to manage a sub-1500 rating team, farm points, and get weapons that were as good as most pre-BT/Hyjal loot. The only thing the arena weapons had was some wasted resilience points, but that was hardly enough to make them useless in PvE, which was not the case with the stamina / resilience heavy arena armor, which didn't translate quite as well.
Attaching a required arena rating to weapons would, hopefully, prevent as many players from obtaining significantly better gear with barely any actual investment compared to what it takes to get a similar item from strictly PvE content.
The information that was released was cryptic though and the debate continued. Thankfully today Drysc released some more information on the upcoming change:
You will only need a specific rating to purchase the items, it won't be required for their use. If you hit 1900 (for instance, this isn't a final number by any means) you'll be able to purchase and use the items, and if you dip below that you won't be able to buy them, but you'll be able to continue using those you've already purchased.
We're also well aware that this could potentially encourage players to join higher rated teams for a chance to obtain the items, and at later time we'll be discussing the solution coming that will prohibit it.
What does this mean? It's hard to say until the official number is released. If the number is too low little will change, but if it's too high the gap between the highly geared successful PvP teams and the struggling newbies will increase even more.
