2005 In File-Sharing: Pirates Win, Sony and RIAA Lose

imageYarr! Slyck calls the winners and losers for 2005 in file-sharing and it looks like a sweep for the pirates. Please note I'm characterizing the legitimate users of file-sharing services and technology as pirates because it's what the RIAA does, so make sure to wear your parrot next time you buy a song off iTunes. Anyway, among the winners are BitTorrent, Apple, LimeWire, and Open Source P2P. They give the RIAA the loss overall, with this pronouncement, "But what good is a Supreme Court victory if you can't enforce it? January 2005 began with 8.4 million calculable P2P users. By June, this number had grown to 8.9 million. Today, it resides at 9.4 million users (without including BitTorrent users), with no slowdown in sight." Oh, look. Your poor, broken business model isn't coming back to life, no matter how many people you sue. It's time to take Old Yeller out back, RIAA. He's your dawg. You do it.
